Matthew is a PhD candidate in the English Department at Maynooth University, where he holds a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Research Scholarship and a John and Pat Hume Research Scholarship. Working under the supervision of Professor Luke Gibbons and Dr Conor McCarthy, his research project explores the contrasting ways in which the literary works of William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett engage with the philosophical legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Prior to beginning his PhD, Matthew graduated from Maynooth University with a BA in English and Philosophy, before graduating from Dublin’s Trinity College with an MPhil in Irish Writing. He has presented his work at The James Joyce Centre, at the School of Advanced Study in the University of London, and more recently at the Centres for Irish Studies in Leuven, Vienna, and Prague. He is founder and convenor of the Maynooth University Doctoral Researchers Writing Group and also serves as a judge in the Literature category of the international Undergraduate Awards programme.
